What to Look for When Buying a Backpack for Your Child

With school season just around the corner, purchasing school supplies is probably closing in on the top spot of your to-do list. If you’ve ever had to buy two or three backpacks for the same child during the year, you know finding the right backpack can save you a headache and cash. Whether you’re planning for a preschooler or high-schooler Before you head out to pick up a bag, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Straps:

When purchasing a backpack, opt for bags with two straps. This is especially true for smaller kids. When a bag has extra books in it, the additional weight causes strain on the back. Kids who wear backpacks with one strap may begin to favor one side of their back. This can cause back pain or other issues later on. Search for a bag with thick, wide straps for extra support.

Lightweight:

While you do want a durable bag, you should find a bag that is also lightweight. Backpacks have been attributed to back strain, keeping the material light reduces the extra weight your little one has to carry around.

Padded back:

If you can, find a bag with extra padding at the back of the pack. This will make the bag more comfortable to carry and keep your little one from getting poked by folders, books or other loose objects.

Several compartments:

Not only will your child be able to find what they need easier, with several pockets, additional pockets also help distribute weight a little more evenly and increase the durability of the bag.

Choose a bright color:

Bright colors are a great option for kids who lose items easily. Also, a bright color backpack makes your little one easier to spot in the rain, snow or foggy weather. If your child walks to or from school, a bright colored bag will make it easier for drivers to spot your student.

Now that you’ve found the perfect backpack for your little one, don’t forget to pack it with the essentials they’ll need to succeed in school. From pens and pencils, markers, paper, and more, don’t forget to put a little extra something in there for their teacher as a gift of appreciation for everything they do.

Those are all really great tips. You sure don’t need a heavy backpack with the weight of the books these kids carry around anyway.
